Glad you asked.

Conservatives cover, or conserve a subjective ideology, meaning not one the whole world necessarily believes is indisputable primary fact to conform to. It isn’t that liberals do not have their own belief theories and mistakes to learn from, but conservatism is noted for its lack of admittance of mistakes. One clue towards a contradiction diverting absolutist state of mind. With such a state of mind, many things are threatening.

We see conservatism promote perception adherence to fear and unknowns, from its inherently insecure introversion.  Conservatism is as introversion can be.  Individuals concern themselves with defending their place, and not in an outwards acceptance of others in their own place. So it favors might makes right, and a non generous attitude toward the full understanding of others positions.  Instead, those are usually “safely” cast into suspicion that works to turn the isolation switch on.

Liberalism can have its own kind of misgivings. If we use the analogy of introversion for conservatism, extroversion fits well in ways for liberalism. Liberals can be all over the place once a theory seems true. It is uncanny how in some conservative circles, a few ‘those kinds of people’ will receive much head nodding and agreement, while the same phenomenon happens in many liberals circles. Data that contradicts some liberals theories gets “indicted” quite like in conservative minds. In fact, liberals can, in effect, act very conservative, and conservatives behave quite liberally. Just don’t tell them I said so. Might confuse the ideological purity.

Conservatives claim a kind of a-priori knowledge independent of empirical lessons. The flat earth theory and the earth centric universe theory, were held to their ends by conservatives, not because an ideology said the earth could only be flat, but that the deeper empirical theories did not seem true to the uninformed eye. Much conservatism is really against change itself. It cannot be completely independent of empiricism, since any life learns as it goes, irregardless of ideology teachings. Once again, conservatives feared new evidence that countered an old world view thought to be true. They can feel quite sure bout defending truth as an honor, even when one could say they know they are wrong about it. When someone is sure a thing is true, it becomes nearly impossible to “prove” otherwise.

We all have what can be called conservative and liberal tendencies.  Sometimes people say they are economic conservatives yet social liberals, but really for the same reasons; they believe the differing positions in different area are more correct from their point of view. We tend toward conservatism when we wish to conserve our advantage, however that “seems”, over ideas that seem to not integrate with our own. Does not make our protected ideas true, as many conservatives insist they are, just like the flat earth and sun going around the world; They seem to make sense to individuals, just as those two false yet seeming true notions did.

Conservatism acts against a change in paradigm, and often implied by reaction, to resist new truths moving perception towards a higher paradigm shifting level. One not recognized by the conserved minds lens as such. They are fundamentally afraid of increasing knowledge, seeking to deny it its value.  (Example for one issue for some; global warming data.) Knowledge can rightly appear to be the drilling of holes into ones own life preserver. And for that it gets roundly indited as dangerous or unfounded.

How are liberals conservative?

Many liberals can be for environmental protection of the earth systems Commons, as one example, yet go about their lives enjoying many benefits of the current culture. However, build a power plant, or expand a road nearby due to stress of that very lifestyle, and they can get all up in arms. They were fine with not knowing of certain things regarding lifestyle, that in effect, vote by action against changing the paradigm to a higher order. Some elements of liberalism are not fully absorbed by some who are liberal, or applied opportunistically to recognize change needed somewhere, yet ignored somewhere else. I am generously generalizing here. In case you could not tell!

We have become polarized by liberal and conservative identities to keep a consensus from occurring for whatever reason. Likely someones benefit at having a democracy divided and controllable.  This division seems to have wrapped the government into a noose, that tends to support every growing corporate influence over democracy as regulator of the Common interest.

Back to being a liberal or a conservative. I doubt that any of us are purely conservative or liberal, since living would become nearly impossible to manage. And yes, liberal theories conserved can be conservative, again, becoming against the evidence of higher order truths that counter the assumed true belief.– Against changing their minds.

Still. Even a liberals form of conservatism is entrenched in fear of altering a paradigm, or world view, to conserve an absolutist theory. Even if that theory will prove to have been temporary, the momentary conservatism is quite like the conservatism of conservatives.–Faith and trust in what seems true. Go talk to a wall otherwise.

Unfortunately, we could say, for liberalism, is that it requires a lot more on the foot thinking and dissemination of new knowings than I suppose many wish to be processing. It’s very nature is in a kind of fluid change that changes with changing environments and human comprehension. With busy lives, many of us might even look for “excuses” to be kept in the dark on some issues. Might be child labor somewhere, might be we would be all the poorer if it were not for all those low paid workers in China and elsewhere. For then what would be the moral and ethical considerations?  I intend to burn some oil on my next trip to…

Overall, not the same problem with conservatism. It can hold on to its “truth” and declare everyone else followers of falsity. It requires an arsenal of fear and looming uncertainty to keep its herds in unquestioning order. The other world traditions are seen with doubt, and not in the pursuit of a fair knowledge of what they really are. It tends to be quite easy to produce doubt and fear involving maintaining protected ideas, than shift gears with a changing world that conservatism might assume is all the worse for its constant change. Insecurity becomes a bread and butter commodity to be sold. While conservatism can most always fall back on its glorious notions of purity of abstraction that it is “defending”, by resiting change.

Conservatism tends to have ad-hominem thought-terminating clichés to keep its followers from thinking about new information. Galileo was persecuted, for instance. If called a heretic, one is in serious trouble. And it is said that Jesus Christ was given the death penalty. In most families with a conservative dominating personality, all kinds of derogatory blame frames are thrown around to impute the character of those who think differently. Editorial pages can offer us an array of blaming and shaming of an assumed negative “otherness” in implied “bad” people. Once again. Might be well intentioned, but what it tends to be doing is avoiding honestly processing the new realities Life is offering, while generating an atmosphere of shame, along with a potentially false sense of self righteousness needing little life evidence as truthful comparison.

We have generic conservatism and liberalism for survival reasons. It would be wise if we encouraged ourselves to see where we are one and where the other. To survive, we would do well to listen to differing viewpoints and perspective, not stand in fear of learning, but in fear perhaps, of losing everything.

The answer it seems, is in having eyes wide open, yet knowing when it is wise to close them from harm. However, if we just look backwards, we might well doom the future to a one way non refundable blind alley.
