Update: 8/16/08/ I am amazed at the lack of photo’s and video of this storm that looked quite impressive on live film at the time—from a skyscraper. Maybe a lot of views are blocked, but still there are at leeast a few dozen people living in the area. Anyway. Here is a news story today on the occasion.

Tornado warning issued for parts of New York City

by Associated Press

Friday August 15, 2008, 6:18 PM

The National Weather Service issued a tornado warning for New York City Friday evening and advised people to take cover, but the storm appeared to pass without generating a twister.

The severe thunderstorm brought heavy rain, hail and lightning to some areas.

About a year ago, a tornado struck parts of the city. It ripped off roofs and damaged dozens of buildings as it hop-scotched through Brooklyn’s Bay Ridge and Sunset Park neighborhoods.

Tornado warnings are not issued often for the city.

  1. I was working in westchester when I saw the storm approching. I got in my vehicle and procedded to drive. I had driven to the Bronx and the storm seemed to be following. The cloulds were very dark. The sky seemed to have a greenish color. the rain just started to come down lightly when I reached my destination. My instint was to get into the buliding. Which I was glad I did. My friend said in New Rochelle the water came up over the hood of her car. It was freaky but fassinating at the same time. I would love to see real hard storms but of course not get hurt.
