Tornado threat May 25-2008

(Updates of post are available below, through NOAA products, local newspapers and other sources. Parkersburg tornado now rated at low end of EF-5.)

(Personal note: I am a tornado survivor of some 41 plus years. I was interested in weather before that instance and after. My experience of that tornado is posted on my blog pages.)

Hail reported 3.50″ diameter north of Minneapolis

Several tornadoes are now reported 5-25-08,5:50pm,cdt, occurring over several states.

The tornado watch boxes extend from Texas to Northern Minnesota

Tornado warning now in Wisconsin, Northeast of Minneapolis.

Tornadoes in Illinois-getting close to Carbondale IL-hooking right down from the northwest toward Carbondale. Rotating wall cloud reported.

Many supercells today are rotating big time.

4.25″ hail reported in one storm.

Hugo Wisconsin-serious damage.

Tornado now in NE Arkansas

Blackhawk County storm damage. North of Cedar falls, damage reports coming in.

Large tornado reported at Waterloo airport.

Parkersburg tornado update:Parkersburg Tornado Day 2

Tornado at Parkersburg now rated a low EF5.

2nd confirmed EF5 since new Enhanced Fujita Scale went into effect last February. This one maxed out at approx 205 mph. Over 40 mile track, at one time 1.20 miles wide.


  • EF0 — Wind speeds ranging from 65 to 85 mph.
  • EF1 — Wind speeds ranging from 86 to 110 mph.
  • EF2 — Wind speeds ranging from 111 to 135 mph.
  • EF3 — Wind speeds ranging from 136 to 165 mph.
  • EF4 — Wind speeds ranging from 166 to 200 mph.
  • EF5 — Wind speeds of 201 mph or higher.

* TORNADO WARNING FOR...
  SOUTHEASTERN POWESHIEK COUNTY IN CENTRAL IOWA...

* UNTIL 1115 PM CDT.

* AT 1048 PM CDT...NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE DOPPLER RADAR INDICATED A
  SEVERE THUNDERSTORM CAPABLE OF PRODUCING A TORNADO NEAR MALCOM...OR
  26 MILES SOUTHWEST OF MARENGO...MOVING EAST AT 66 MPH.

* THE TORNADO WILL BE NEAR...
  GUERNSEY...BROOKLYN AND DEEP RIVER BY 1055 PM CDT...

THIS TORNADO WARNING REPLACES THE SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING THAT
WAS IN EFFECT FOR THE SAME AREA. GO TO A BASEMENT OR SMALL INTERIOR
ROOM ON THE LOWEST FLOOR!
